Brushless motors

Brushless motors: What you need to know.

Open up any R/C magazine today and you’ll probably find an article on brushless motors. There’s a good reason for this, brushless motors offer significant performance increases over the standard brushed motor. We’ll give you a quick overview of what differentiates brushless motors and why your next motor should definitely be a brushless one.

The trouble with brushed motors.

The trouble with brushed motors was that over time the brushes would wear out as the brushes need to make contact in order for the motor to keep spinning. Because the brushes were continually making and breaking connection the motor would also experience sparking and electrical noise. And the real downside of brushed motors is that the brushes limit the maximum speed that can be produced by the motor.

Introducing the brushless motor.

Brushless motors don’t suffer from these problems and because of this they have increased efficiency that can result in longer run times of about 20 to 30 percent. But this is the fact you’re really going to love, they allow for higher performance which means better acceleration and higher top speeds. Brushless motors also have less electrical radio interference and are virtually maintenance free.

They may cost a little more then your standard motor but with all the benefits, you’d be crazy not to make your next electric motor a brushless one.
